Reshma Gupta, MD, MSHPM
Reshma Gupta is the lead author and researcher for the HVCCS. She is the physician lead for their accountable care transformation team and data analytics team spanning all clinical divisions across the UCLA health system through The Office of Accountable Care and Population Health. She is the physician lead for their quality and value data analytics team and related value promotion efforts across all clinical divisions through their Faculty Practice Group and shared savings programs. Previously she was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at UCLA and a chief resident at the University of Washington. Dr. Gupta received her MD at UCSF and her masters in health policy and management at UCLA.
Dr. Gupta’s work has focused in health system innovation, implementation, redesign, and education to better define and improve the culture of delivering high quality care at lower cost. She has worked as an expert consultant with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovations center (CMMI) Comprehensive Primary Care initiative testing new models of value promoting payment reform. Dr. Gupta also serves nationally as the Director of Evaluation and Outreach at Costs of Care, Inc. a global NGO working to curate provider insights to provide high quality care and lower costs. Here she oversees the joint Costs of Care/ABIM Foundation Learning Network which aims to support clinical innovators in scaling and sustaining best practices that improve value. Dr. Gupta has published numerous research and perspective pieces about healthcare value and been interviewed by national radio outlets such as NPR.
Chris Moriates, MD
Chris Moriates is the Assistant Dean for Healthcare Value and an Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. He is responsible for creating an innovative curriculum for value-based healthcare for undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education, as well as building a robust value improvement program that engages healthcare providers across the healthcare community in Austin.
Dr. Moriates speaks locally and nationally about cost awareness education for physicians and has implemented a cost curriculum for residents at UCSF that was highlighted by the New England Journal of Medicine. He is co-author of the book Understanding Value-Based Healthcare (McGraw-Hill, 2015), which Dr. Atul Gawande called “a masterful primer for all clinicians.” He is a founding editor for the “Teachable Moments” series in JAMA Internal Medicine. He is also the Director of Implementation Initiatives at Costs of Care, a global non-profit organization curating clinician insights that drive better care at lower cost.
James Harrison, MPH, PhD
James Harrison is a health services researcher and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. James’ expertise in qualitative and quantitative research methods allows him to fully explore approaches to improve patient outcomes and the quality of care delivery for medicine and surgical patients. He has co-authored a number of studies utilizing the modified Delphi methodology that was used to develop the HVCCS.
Victoria Valencia, MPH
Victoria Valencia is the Assistant Director for Healthcare Value at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Her background is in public health and statistics. She is a data analyst and programmer and uses R to analyze and visualize complex data from clinical research databases and electronic health records to help answer questions around quality, value and appropriateness of care provided to patients. She has co-authored several articles that investigate ways to improve the value of care patients receive while in the hospital.
